What are The Benefits of Restorative Dentistry?

Restorative dental procedures are critical for preventing problems such as tooth damage, decay, gum disease, and missing teeth. Without proper treatment, these issues can escalate, causing severe pain or even loss of oral function. Here are a few benefits of restorative dentistry:

1. Able to Address Various Problems

One of the primary benefits of restorative dentistry is that it can address multiple dental problems in the most effective way for your smile. Our dentists will first examine your mouth to determine if any issues need repairing. From there, they will devise a personalized treatment plan. Your treatment may include dental fillings, implants, installation of crowns, or bridges.

Improperly chewed food can cause impaired digestion. When your smile has full function, you’ll be able to enjoy a healthy, robust diet without pain or poor digestion.

An infected, injured, chipped, or cracked tooth can cause a lot of pain and discomfort. This can worsen if left unattended. Restorative procedures get to the root of your dental problems, relieving pain or discomfort.

If you have missing teeth, the overall structure of your mouth can weaken and deteriorate with time. Dental restorations such as implants act as tooth roots to preserve your jawbone, helping you keep a healthy, youthful appearance.

Failure to address dental issues can pave the way to more complex problems. Restorative dental procedures protect your natural teeth and restore oral function in the long-term. At VIP Family Dentistry, we use amalgam-free restorations, which are safe for everyone, including senior citizens and expectant mothers who may experience a range of dental issues.

Composite Fillings

If you face a chip, crack, or cavity, we can restore your tooth with composite fillings instead of metal. These are fillings made of a composite resin that matches the color of your natural teeth. They not only look great but are also better for your oral health. With proper care, a composite filling can easily last ten years or more, providing lasting protection for your tooth.

Inlays and Onlays

Inlay ceramic crown fixation over tooth in 3DInlays and onlays are dental restorations commonly used to repair damaged teeth and prevent further decay. They’re often an ideal choice in cases where the damage doesn’t need a crown, but a filling might not be strong enough to handle daily wear.

When there’s decay or damage to your tooth's chewing surface, Dr. Van Derhei can use an inlay. If the damage includes one or more cusps (corners) of your tooth, an onlay may be the best solution.

Inlays and onlays are created in a dental lab then attached to your tooth. This allows for precise shaping and design. Our dentists expertly measure your restoration and place it, returning your tooth to its optimal function.

Should I Get a Porcelain Crown?

Over time, your teeth may weaken, leaving you susceptible to decay, cracks, and discoloration. Porcelain crowns renew the appearance and function of your teeth. At VIP Family Dentistry, our crowns are crafted from the finest porcelain to make them durable, functional, and aesthetically appealing.

You can get a porcelain crown to:

  • Protect a weak tooth from future damage
  • Restore a tooth with severe decay
  • Repair a fractured, cracked, or chipped tooth
  • Restore a tooth after a root canal procedure
  • Protect a damaged tooth from further wear and tear
  • Improve the appearance of misshapen teeth

The Porcelain Crown Process

An impression of your tooth is sent to the lab, where skilled technicians craft your custom-made dental crown. For the interim period, your tooth is fitted with a temporary crown.

On your final visit, we remove the temporary crown and set the permanent one. We take the time to ensure the porcelain crown has the right look and fit before cementing it into place.

Maintaining Your Porcelain Crown

Porcelain crowns have a lifespan of 5-15 years. However, to preserve them, you must observe proper dental hygiene and regular checkups. You should also avoid biting onto hard foods and objects that may cause your crowns to break.

Fixed Bridges

If you have missing teeth, we can rectify the gaps in your smile with dental bridges. A bridge is a dental restoration that consists of a false tooth or pontic supported by anchoring crowns on either side of the gap. Bridges are made from a broad range of materials, often using porcelain to aesthetically complement your natural teeth.

Dental Bridge Planning and Placement

Traditionally, you require two visits for a dental bridge fitting. On the initial visit, our dentists will examine your teeth and discuss the treatment with you. They then prepare your teeth to receive the crowns. An impression of your teeth is also taken via a soft mold and used to create the bridge. You’ll be fitted with a temporary bridge to support you in the meantime.

During the second appointment, the temporary bridge is removed and replaced with the new bridge. Our dentist will check the fit and function, and then you’ll be ready to use your new restoration to speak, eat, and smile with ease.

Bridges, Dentures, or Implants?

If you have several missing teeth and are looking for a permanent solution, then implants are ideal. If you have one or just a few missing teeth, a bridge may be suitable. Dentures are often used when you’re missing most or all of your teeth and either don’t want or don’t qualify for dental implants. We can recommend the best restorative treatment for you, depending on your case and personal goals.

Are Dentures Right for Me?

If you lose some or all of your teeth due to tooth decay, gum disease, or an injury, dentures can restore your chewing function and speech. These are dental prosthetics designed to replace all or some of your missing teeth on either jaw. Dentures can fully restore oral function and also support facial muscles.

There are three main types of dentures. These include:

Full Dentures - This type of dentures replaces a complete set of teeth on either jaw. Upper jaw dentures consist of a gum-colored acrylic base that covers your gums and the roof of your mouth. Full dentures for your lower jaw are similar but U-shaped to avoid covering your tongue.

Partial Dentures - You can get partial dentures when you have a few missing teeth. They are supported by your natural teeth in one of several ways, with the most common being clasps that anchor around your natural teeth. Partial dentures are always customized and can fit nearly any configuration of missing teeth.

Implant-Supported Dentures - These are dentures that anchor on dental implants instead of resting on your gums. Our dentists may recommend implant-supported dentures if you are missing teeth and have enough bone to support dental implants.

If you are looking for a more comfortable and durable way to replace your missing teeth, implant-supported dentures are a great solution. They remain intact as you eat, speak, and engage in other daily activities.

Why You Need Periodontal Care

African american girl brushing teeth with dad.Periodontal diseases cause infections that affect structures surrounding your teeth. This includes your gums, alveolar bone, and periodontal ligament. Most adults will experience some form of gum disease in their lifetime, and the situation can get severe if left untreated.

Diligent oral care and regular cleanings at VIP Family Dentistry help to keep your gums and oral structures healthy. If you develop gum disease, Dr. Van Derhei will recommend treatment to halt its progress and preserve your gums. Depending on your condition, we can perform a deep cleaning treatment to remove all tartar from below your gum line. A root planing procedure will smooth out the roots of your teeth so that your gums can reattach and support your teeth once more.
